Softball Sweeps Weekly NEC Honors
Following an opening weekend that included a pair of wins, the Central Connecticut State University softball program swept the weekly NEC honors it was announced on Tuesday. Grace Lawton was named the Player of the Week, Liz Hamilton took Pitcher of the Week and Stella Gasper was selected Rookie of the Week.
Lawton powered the CCSU lineup, hitting .579 with four runs scored and seven RBIs. She collected two doubles and two homeruns, and posted a .667 on-base percentage. Lawton had three hits and two RBIs in the season-opening win at Norfolk St. in the Spartan Clash. She added four hits against Rider on Friday and two more hits and two RBIs on versus the Broncs on Saturday. She closed the weekend by going 2-for-2 with two homers, three RBIs and a walk in Sunday's win against Rider.
Hamilton pitched in three games, making two starts, and went 2-0 with 3.20 ERA over 19.2 inning. She recorded 13 strikeouts. In the season-opener, Hamilton tossed 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in win over Norfolk St. She also started Sunday's finale against Rider, tossing 7.0 innings and scattering five hits with a strikeout. She also came on in relief vs. Norfolk St. on Saturday and struck out 5 in 5.2 innings.
Gasper started all five games and hit .368 with four RBIs, a run scored and four doubles. She posted a .579 slugging percentage and a .368 on-base percentage with a stolen base. She opened the season with two hits and an RBI in the win over Norfolk St., then had three hits and three RBIs against Rider on Friday. On Saturday she had two doubles and a stolen base at Norfolk State.
CCSU is scheduled to host Saint Peter's for a doubleheader on Sunday.
