LoPiccolo, Gasper Headline Five Softball Weekly Awards
LoPiccolo was named Player of the Week after hitting .875 and driving in nine runs
The Central Connecticut State softball team scored 42 runs in a three-game NEC sweep of Saint Francis this weekend and now have the hardware to show for it. Sophia LoPiccolo was named the NEC Player of the Week and Stella Gasper took home Rookie of the Week honors. The duo was joined on the NEC Prime Performer list by Ava Cino, Grace Lawton and Reagan Vunak.
LoPiccolo hit .857 in the series, driving in nine runs and finishing with four extra base hits. She had six RBI on Sunday as the Blue Devils scored a Division I program record 22 runs. She was 1-1 with a three-run homer and drove in three runs with sac flies. She doubled twice in the second game on Saturday, going 3-3 in that contest. LoPiccolo was 3-2 with a homerun and run scored in the series opener.
Gasper batted .625 in the series, scoring four times and driving in a pair of runs. She was 5-8 on the weekend with three walks for an on-base percentage of .727. She was 1-1 with three walks and scored three times in the Sunday win.
Cino finished the set with a 6-9 effort at the plate, doubling four times, driving in four runs and scoring five runs
Lawton went 7-11 on the weekend with three homeruns, including two on Sunday. She drove in eight, five Sunday, and scored five times in the series.
Vunak scored six times, three on Sunday, while going 5-8 at the plate. She walked three times, homered once and drove in a pair of runs.
The Blue Devils, who have won seven straight games, are 10-8 overall. They are tops in the nation at 2.56 doubles per game entering their Wednesday doubleheader with Hofstra. That series is set for 1:00 pm at the CCSU Softball Field.
