Softball Completes Sweep With Division I Record 22 Run Outburst

The Central Connecticut State softball team completed a weekend sweep of NEC host Saint Francis University on Sunday, earning a 22-8 victory, in five innings. The Blue Devils have won seven straight to improve to 10-8 overall and are 6-0 in league action. 

The 22 runs scored in a Division I program record, surpassing the 18 runs scored in a shutout of LIU Brooklyn on April 24, 1992. CCSU laced out 16 hits in the contest, with 10 of those going for extra bases.

KEY MOMENTS 

• The Blue Devils sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored three runs in the first four at-bats of the afternoon. Ava Cino laced an RBI double to score Reagan Vunak and came around on a homerun by Grace Lawton in the next at-bat. The next three Blue Devils earned walks, and Sophia LoPiccolo made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly. Kristen Bozek followed with a single that scored the fifth run of the inning. 

•  The Red Flash got a run back in the bottom of the first, with a couple of singles and a fielder's choice ground out 

• The Central offense plated six runs on three hits in the second, highlighted by Lawton's second homerun in as many at-bats; this one a three ru homer to center field to make the score 8-1. Skylar Warn had an RBI double and was followed by sacrifice flies from LoPiccolo and Bozen to make it 11-1. 

• SFU again scored in their portion of the inning, on a walk and a single to right center to make the deficit nine runs, 11-2. 

• CCSU plated four more runs in the third inning, again on three base hits, to build a 14-2 advantage. A Stella Gasper walk drove in the first run of the frame, while a Warn double plated two runs and LoPiccolo drove in the final run of the frame with her third sacrifice fly in three innings. 

• The Red Flash scored the next six runs of the game, plating one in the bottom of the third, before holding CCSU scoreless in the fourth. The Red Flash then scored five runs, all with two outs, in their portion of the fourth-inning, Consecutive walks preceded a three-run homerun. After another single, the Blue Devils brough Liz Hamilton to the circle where she was greeted by an Olivia Kolowitz homerun, before retiring the side with the Blue Devils on top 15-8. 

• Central answered with a six-hit, seven-run showing in the top of the fifth inning and sent 11 batters to the plate. LoPiccolo and Lina Pizzella both had three run homers in the frame, while Warn added an RBI double 

• Hamilton retired the Red Flash in order, with two strikeouts, to close out the game.
